Tortoise & The Hare Experience Ep 71 “A. J. Benza”

In this episode of the Tortoise & The Hare Experience, we’re going through more submissions that were sent to us! And we brought along A.J. Benza for the ride!! A.J. Benza was one of NYC’s most celebrated (and feared) gossip columnists, writing both the “Hot Copy” and “Downtown” columns for the NY Daily News. His other writing credits include Playboy, Penthouse, George, Razor Magazine, Esquire, Los Angeles Times and New York Times.

He is the author of two books, “Fame, Ain’t it a Bitch” and “74 and Sunny.” He also hosts his popular weekly “Fame Is a Bitch” podcast, which wraps his detailed personal stories around current news and events mostly associated with Showbiz.

The Black Watch:
The Paper Boats

Having indeed lost his beloved father this year, John Andrew Fredrick of the black watch, the singer-songwriter of fifteen LPs and five EPs now (who has also published four novels and, last year, a book that analyzes the early films of Wes Anderson), mitigated a bit of the pain of his loss by churning out another dream-fuzz-jangle-pop collection of super catchy, literary guitar-heavy songs. Ones that doubtlessly reflect the expertise that comes from 30-some-odd years of putting out records.

David Philips:
My Gravity

David Philips continues with his D.I.Y. approach for this his 7th album to date and his 6th on Black And Tan Records. Infusing Blues, Soul and Americana, he plays all the instruments on the record and also produced and recorded the album himself, as well as providing the hand drawn artwork. “Get Along” has a more upbeat and positive slant in terms of the songwriting compared to previous releases and although a full band sound is featured on most tracks, Philips still manages to keep things raw, organic and centered around his voice and acoustic guitar playing.

The Noise Figures:
Lethargy

From the opening of the track with the massive tribal drumbeat and the loyal-to-fuzz Anatolian guitar riffage, The Noise Figures welcome us to the dreamy delirium they intensively describe in their lyric sheet and sink us into a ritual vortex of hypnotism.

This is a hip-hop boombap track by a South African artist, Modecai called Millions.
