Music Purchases in 2009 Surpass 2008- Well, Sort Of!

According to Nielson Soundscan numbers music sales rose in 2009.  While this is good news, album sales took a dive!  Digital sales were up from last year, but those were only sales that rose.  The Beatles, Taylor Swift, MJ, Beyonce and Lady Ga-Ga were some of the most successful artists in ’09.  Do these numbers really surprise anyone?  Not me!

Artists have been putting out some pretty shitty ass albums.  Why buy a whole album when you could buy a song for a buck?  Especially when you get a bunch of songs that were put together in minutes!  Record labels need to stop jamming these mediocre albums down our throats!  They need to have artists put out good albums.  Where have all the great albums gone?  You can still find great albums, but they are not being pushed by the radio industry.

Take Kings of Leon, for example.  They have been around for years now, making great music.  All of a sudden they are played on the radio and they are the next “big thing?”  We, as consumers, have voiced our opinions.  We want quality production and writing if you want our hard earned dollars.  Artists and Record Labels are getting these numbers, but they still feel like they can put out less than stellar albums.  We will continue to buy singles at $.99, and get these disposable songs that we’ll forget about in 2 months.  But at least it is a cheaper than dropping $10 for an album we’ll forget about in 3 months!

Here’s a shout out to the Music Industry:  You want to pry $10 from my wallet?  Then start showing some originality and put out some damn good music!
