Editorial- Tiger Woods

As we enter a new year and a new decade, I will now be doing some different blogs in “010”. In place of my musication segment, I will be doing an editorial piece every Tuesday. In this piece I will be expanding on an idea/subject matter or giving my thoughts on a subject brought up on the Music News Show, Shell Theory or Drinkcast.

For my first editorial piece I wanted to talk about Tiger Woods. Why is it so hard to believe that an athlete is cheating on his wife? Why do we hold athletes in such high regard? I cannot think of one “superstar” athlete who hasn’t had some controversy surrounding their personal career. Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Andre Agassi, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez and now Tiger. All have had allegations of infidelity, drug use and gambling, yet we still get shocked when certain players become “humanized.” I, for one, am not.

Let’s think about it, sports is the only profession that is done since childhood. Many athletes begin their craft at a very young age. If you are a star athlete in football, baseball or basketball, you get “special” privileges in high school & college. For men, depending on how famous you are in school, women are everywhere! Why would it stop at the professional level? As far as Tiger goes, he is a golf star, which does not get a lot of attention in school. So he may not have had his pick of the litter. So now that he has fame, of course women are going to throw themselves at him!

Tiger is a superior golfer because of his competitive nature. Do you think it stops on the golf course? Of course not! It seeps into every aspect of his life. He’s competitive in life, and now we find out with the ladies too. I am not saying it is right, all I am saying is that we shouldn’t be surprised! We applaud these athletes because of their fire, yet we chastise them when their fire does something that society feels is wrong! Why is it that a rock star can sleep with thousands of girls, yet a golfer does the same, and we are shocked? Look, I understand that Tiger was married, but he is a man. If YOU were a millionaire and were married, and an absolutely gorgeous girl wants you, you’d think about it. I am not saying you’d do it, but you’d give it some thought!

We are all humans, just because someone can hit a ball, sing a song or act doesn’t mean that they are high and mighty. We give “fame” too much credence! Fame IS NOT REAL, it is something that is propagated by the media. If no one was famous, would we have magazines? TV Shows? Movies? Think about it! Once we realize that fame is not important, then we will not be shocked when “famous” people do dumb things, or show their human side. We helped cultivate his competitive spirit, and we shouldn’t “cast the first stone” when his competitiveness gets him into trouble!

A friend once told me, “Show me a fine girl, and I’ll show you someone who’s tired of sleeping with her!”

  1. I heard a quote like that when Eric Benet cheated on Halle Barry. A lot of people were saying, “Who the hell is dumb enough to cheat on Halle Barry!?” Well, shit, no matter who you are … You’re gonna get boring!
