Artist of the Week- Ringside

Living and working here in Los Angeles, we are pretty spoiled.  We have a great collection of musical artists, from the rich and famous to the little known Indie band.  With all the richness in music we are surrounded by, there are several local artists that truly stick out.  Ringside is one of those bands who you may not know, but need to.

The band released their debut album in 2005, when singer Scott Thomas broke his back.  Needless to say, he had more pressing issues than promoting his debut album.  During that time, he allowed his friend Enrique Iglesias to cover his song “Tired Of Being Sorry.”  The song became in an international hit for Iglesias.  Although the attention of the song was great, this was the beginning of the end with his record label.

Like most Independent artists, Thomas knew he had to promote his album.  So, once he was back on his feet, he quickly hit the road with Ben Harper.  The two toured Australia, where Thomas promoted his album and sold bootlegs to fans.  Because of Thomas’ talent, he began to gain some notoriety in Western Europe.  His music also began to grow in Russia of all places.  With his success in Russia, Thomas was able to build his own studio in Los Angeles where he could explore his artistic side.  With the freedom of not having a record label and the freedom to create, Thomas released the Money Ep.

The Lost Days album was produced by Thomas, as he also played all the instruments on the record.  Thomas also called on some of his friends to join him in studio:  Ben Harper appears on the title track “Lost Days,” while Ozomatli contributed on the tracks “Freedom” and “Good.”  Canadian superstar Esthero, Res and Graph Nobel also joined in on the fun singing backing vocals on several tracks.  Joaquin Phoenix was also spotted in studio providing some late night inspiration.

The final result:  an amazing blend of funk-rock that takes the listener on a roller-coaster ride.  “The Lost Days” album is by far one of the best albums of 2011.  Thomas will be appearing on the Enter the Shell Show in mid-April, as he will give our listeners insight into this amazing album.  Until then, follow the links below and follow this amazing musician.  Ringside will be performing at The Roxy Theatre in LA on March 31, 2011.  Check their official website below for further details.
