It seems as though things are starting to swing over here at Enter the Shell. With Turrtle’s big band recording recently released and flu season in the midst, we’ve caught the swingin’ bug and we like it. So to keep with the sensation, this week we bring you Christabel and the Jons, an artist well-versed with the exciting sound of a little something called Tennessee Swing.
Based out of Tennessee, Christabel and the Jons is headed by Christa DeCicco, an ornamental horticulturalist and landscape designer who gained a love for writing and performing music by age five. After releasing her self-titled solo album in 2005 she and the Jons got their stuff together and released their first album under the name Christabel and the Jons, which demonstrated the musical fortitude the whole band possessed. The talented Jons, are comprised of Jon Whitlock, Seth Hopper, andVince Ilagan.
When listening to Christabel and the Jons, you’re hearing a few different influences. Whether it’s their standards or original work getting you hooked, the folksy influence of Tennessee reeling you in, it’s the jazzy tunes accentuated by DeCicco’s swoon-inducing voice that will keep you coming back for more or making sure you never leave. And since their debut album, Love and Circumstances, in 2006 the band has only sharpened and improved upon their initial sound, infusing more styles into their music, making them all the more addicting.
Christabel and the Jons have thus far released four albums, one being a live album and their most recent release from 2010, a Christmas album. The band is currently working on their fifth album entitled The Same Mistake, and is in the midst of touring the south. Though perhaps not a well-known name in the music industry, Christabel and the Jons have certainly earned their chops, playing festivals like Bonnaroo and with names like Loudon Wainwright, and our very own former artist of the week, the Two Man Gentlemen Band, making Christabel and the Jons a band to definitely keep your eyes and ears on. Fortunately, we here at Enter the Shell can help you do that with the links below!
