As KT Tunstall’s first album in three years, Tiger Suit is a poppy, alternative, folky and ultimately fun effort by this half-Chinese, half-Scottish songwriting queen.
“Uummannaq Song” and “Glamour Puss” start the album off on a hoppy start, with the former bringing in a hard acoustic under Tunstall’s voice, giving the impression that this is like any other KT album. But when it builds up with the vocal harmonizations, bouncy electric guitar and big drums, it becomes apparent that this girl is out for blood … Disco ball dancer blood.
Songs like “Push That Knot Away,” “Come On, Get In” and “Golden Frames” have Country influences but “Fade Like a Shadow” brightens up the mood while “Difficulty” starts off with a Kings of Leon-esque grungy guitar. The middle of the album is definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions as well as super appealing and universal musical stylings.
Tiger Suit‘s UK single, “(Still A) Weirdo,” is a safe bet for a single, as it’s pretty mellow and acoustic-y, so it will draw in those who have been following this songstress for some time. It eases them in to the half-electronic feel of the rest of the album with the repeated, short breaths throughout.
The appeal of Tiger Suit comes from her ability to flawlessly merge country, folk and dance beats together in one. Not to mention the obscene amount of whistling that occurs and gives the album a light-hearted, fun-loving tone. Everyone from your toddler to your grandmammy will love this album.
