Monte Negro – Cosmic Twins

Bi-lingual, alt-prog act, Monte Negro‘s sophomore release, Cosmic Twins, oozes with new wave synth lines, bouncy bass, atmospheric vocals and hook-laden guitars.  It’s like listening to the rock world according to Muse as interpreted by The Killers.

The So Cal four-piece is comprised of singer guitarist Kinski; guitarist Jason; bassist Rodax and drummer El Pipe.  Their brand of stratospheric alt-rock is right in line with the current modern rock trend.  Electronically based and nearly danceable all while maintaining huge guitar hooks is a decided departure from the heavy-handed, ultra-aggressive sounds of previous years.  It would behoove a major label to snatch these cats up while they can.

The stand out tracks include the party inducing “Faux Power” with its poppy rhythm and vocal hook; the slightly sexy-stomp of “Como Me Acuerdo” and the driving “The Longest Day.” The only head-scratcher of a track is the pseudo-nu metal “Guero.”  I can respect the frustration expressed in the track, but the anger that boils over doesn’t quite match the band’s otherwise dance-floor positive vibe.

Cosmic Twins is definitely worth the listen, especially in preparation for a night out with friends.  Add a copy to your library and enjoy.
