LCD Soundsystem :: This Is Happening

By

Ah, the musical project that people keep telling me to listen to but I never get around to doing it. I’ve heard a couple of LCD Soundsystem’s songs and really like them but for some reason I haven’t gotten into their whole albums until this, their third (and supposedly final) release in This Is Happening.

This Is Happening starts off slow with “Dance Yrself Clean.” Upon first hearing it, you wouldn’t even dream of dancing. Light claps and a very slow thick beat pulse through the first couple minutes with Lead Singer James Murphy bringing his voice in. After this couple of minutes though, the song picks up to a massive thick beat that includes a drum kit and Murphy getting a little more aggressive … Just the way I like it! This is the part of the song that really makes you want to dance yourself clean, because this track will make you feel dirty!

The album’s first single is “Drunk Girls” and this track has a more punk rock feel rather than a pop/dance track. I’m not a huge fan of the track itself, perhaps because of the simplicity of the lyrics. The video is definitely fun and weird while the track follows suit. The strong guitars buzz around Murphy’s shouts of “Drunk boys! Drunk girls!”

“Home” finishes off This Is Happening with a simple cymbal beat, metronome beat and all-over-the-place synths. This intro is definitely a little busy but comes together really well, especially when Murphy’s ghostly “hoooome” enters the picture. The drums come in and then Murphy’s verses on top of everything else, making for the biggest, danciest layer-cake of all! I love this song, even though it can seem a little overwhelming at times! For the last song on the last album of a project that may never exist anymore, this is a great way to end it.
