Joshua Radin :: The Rock and the Tide

I know I’m not the resident singer/songwriter expert, but this week Mr. Joshua Radin released his third album, The Rock and the Tide, a mix of gospel, country and straight up, good ol’ fashioned singer/songwriter qualities. So like any good music blogger, I’m going to give you a little taste.

I first discovered Radin on an episode of Ellen. Yes. I watch Ellen. Get over it. He actually performed, in person (about the 3:10 mark in the video), during Ellen and Portia de Rossi’s wedding. That’s where my interest was peaked, but it wasn’t until this release that I actually got to hear more of his material.

The Rock and the Tide is a nice compilation of genres, from country and rockabilly (“You’re Not as Young,” “Nowhere to Go”) to alternative love songs (“You Got What I Need,” “Think I’ll Go Inside).

The album’s single, “Streetlight,” is typical singer/songwriter gold, seeing Radin implementing soft drums and a piano. Country influences dance around this song as well, which you can hear quite clearly with the banjo and the harmonizing-yet-soft vocals.

All-in-all, The Rock and the Tide is the typical, “safe” singer/songwriter release. That’s not to say it’s bad, but it’s nothing special, either. Radin’s sweet, silky voice makes this album a nice listen for those days you want to stay in on a rainy day while not being a total downer about it.
