Building on the goodwill of their critically adored debut The Loose EP, LA’s Irontom are back with The Nitro EP, a four-on-the-floor blast of classic rock indebted bombast and punk-tinged, effects-laden grooves. The EP shows considerable growth for the young band, with single “What Will Happen to All the Indie Stars” containing the group’s strongest songwriting to date. A lament for a simpler time, the track is a requiem for disposable indie bands that get swallowed in our hyper-tweaked, ADD generation. The Nitro EP is Irontom’s mission statement: a howling, stomping declaration from a band that intends to be around for the long haul.

Mortar & Pestle is a new band, but has deep roots.  The sounds of a pinball machine at the opening of new EP might say fun, but give way to a darkness that is real.  Born on the kitchen piano of a studio apartment, days after Lambert and keyboardist Paul Shinichi first met at a mutual friend’s party, the two were joined within the year by drummer Sean Paul Duke.

 Tragically, the friend who brought them together met with an untimely death shortly after she gave the band its name.  “She wanted to be the one to name us,” says Shinichi. “We were struggling with a name for months, and then she came up with Mortar & Pestle. I think honoring her life is one reason why we are together. This record is really about her.”

A physician by day and a soul singer by night, Bellamy took up singing as a hobby 10 years ago, paying dues in cover bands, musical theater (her role in an R&B version of “Porgy & Bess” impressed the New York Times), and with a one-woman show where she told stories of her life in between tunes.

With her debut album set for release on May 14^th, and its opening anthem “Put Down The Foot” available now, Bellamy can say she’s a singer just as easily as she can say she’s a doctor. “Several people have asked why I am pursuing music when I already have a good job,” she muses. “The answer is simple – because I love it.”

Formed in 2007, almost immediately out the gate, Chic Gamine (loosely translated as mischievous young thing) took the roots/vintage soul scene by storm. In 2008 came their self-titled Canadian debut, which went on to win a Juno Award for Best Roots Album of 2009. In 2010, they released their sophomore Canadian release, and were rewarded with a second Juno nomination, again for Roots Album of the Year. 2011 was spent touring intensely, playing U.S. and Canadian music festivals as well as a six month, coast to coast tour with Marc Broussard. For Closer, Chic Gamine enlisted Rick Rubin studio virtuosos Andrew Scheps, Russell Elevado and Dana Nielsen, whose previous work with Justin Timberlake, Jay Z and Alicia Keys delicately melds a crisp, studio sheen with the warm, intimate harmonies and naturally vibrant soundscape of Chic Gamine.

Greetings all, I was on assignment last month but we are back with a great show. While I was away my physical & e-mail mailboxes were overflowing with new music. 2013 is starting off with a bang! 

While rolling the ’64 out to Palm Springs I got cut off by a minivan in Banning. Thank god I stopped short

On assignment at Frank Sinatra’s Palm Springs home. This is The Chairman’s Stereo

because a c/d came sliding out from under my seat. The c/d in question was Parlovr’s “Kook Soul”. This album is going on a year old & it is as fresh as a loaf of olive bread from LaBrea Bakery. I am ashamed I let this one slip past me for the past year. This Montreal Trio makes my soul soar.

I had the chance in 2011 to interview Boy + Kite (which I’ll leave the link to the interview as we did a playlist together); I really liked their sound and was thrilled that they are starting to put out new material. I also heard that Family life soon called, inflicting constant delays on the production of the video for the band’s popular song “Think In Stereo,” but eventually kids get born and so do paint fight filled films. Ralph and Chris found themselves hating life after school, so they started writing songs like the ones they enjoyed throughout college. After putting a solid lineup of friends together, they quickly started releasing music and referring to themselves in the third person. It took the band a while to come up with a name as meaningful as Boxed Wine, but they believe it says everything it needs to. The group’s influences are quite varied, but one should listen and make relevant comparisons to all other bands in existence (especially ones that love fuzzy bass and disco beats).

Their songs don’t all sound the same, so if one isn’t your piece of cake then please try out another. They probably won’t be offended, and are relatively confident that cake metaphors are still cool…

I got an email about the band Kiven, I liked their sound so much I thought I’d pass it along to you and see what you think. They’ve got a unique sound influenced by a wide variety of musical spectrums.
