Dynasty Electric-Golden Arrows

Some bands are a mystery, they don’t quite fit into a particular genre and are such a hodgepodge of bands, there is nothing really to compare them to. Brooklyn based, Dynasty Electric is one of those bands. I saw them as described as ‘indie electro-pop;’ well, that description doesn’t quite do their sound justice. I would describe their sound as a psychedelic modern-retro electro-pop garage-rocktronica funk-pop lounge music-ish creeper rock, I thought one of their songs summed it up fairly well; Electro Retro. If Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PJ Harvey, Gwen Stefani, the Eurythmics, Grace Slick, and the chick from Heart were to have a child, then forced that child to get into music, and that child eventually formed a band…well, you get the point. Bottom line is, Dynasty Electric is an eclectic mix of sounds that somehow work together to form something pretty damn cool.

While the music itself isn’t particularly revolutionary, a blend of semi-generic synth and guitar that seem to be recycled. But, the vocals of Jenny Electrik are unique, fun, powerful, and are what really pulls this album. Many of the songs are great (Radiation, Golden Arrows, Reality Check-until vocals are involved, Box of Light, and Friends), some of the others are not worth your time, and there was something I found so annoying about Bird Song that I almost turned off the album entirely. Dynasty Electric could make some fine tuning to be a huge band in the next few years, I really look forward to hearing more from them.

Bottom line: Golden Arrows is unique, and a great album… for the most part.

(Anyone else think Jenny looks like Napoleon Dynamite in this video?)
