Drake :: Thank Me Later

As the deep-voiced, melancholy, wheelchair-bound Jimmy in the teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” Aubrey Graham was a likable character. Now, as 2010 rapper/singer sensation Drake, he’s a cocky, nasal-voiced millionaire.

The 2010 release of his album Thank Me Later has catapulted this young 23-year-old into the limelight and all over radio stations everywhere. Thank Me Later starts off strong with a great flow as well as a nice singing voice and an appearance by Alicia Keys.

The album gives the listener hope with the first few songs, which show a sensitive rapper worried about relationships (familial, friendly and sexual) and stardom, but as time goes on, it becomes boring and his cockiness just comes off as annoying.

The production and his flow are top-notch, but his nasally voice gets under your skin. “Up All Night” features Nicki Minaj gets your head bobbing but the next song, “Fancy” featuring Swizz Beats and T.I., has one of the most annoying choruses of the summer (“Oh, you fancy, huh?/Oh, you fancy, huh?/Oh, you fancy, huh?/Nails done, hair done, everything did”).

“Find Your Love” is a surprising highlight, but not because it is unknown. In fact, this track has been his most successful single. I say surprising because the beat is very poppy and Drake sings throughout the entire song, showing off his surprisingly appealing singing voice.

Drake has the talent to stand alone as a singer, especially with the production of this album. Unfortunately, he insists on playing the role of a bad-ass (from Canada) by rapping, which ruins the whole thing. Appearances by fellow up-and-comer Nicki Minaj and heavy-hitters Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, The Dream, T.I. and Swizz Beatz don’t seem to save Thank Me Later.
