So I know its a rarity when I write but, I got a last minute invite the other day while at work to go to the Hollywood Bowl. The kicker was that it was going to be “John Williams: Maestro of the Movies”. It had been a while since I had been to the bowl and I have been on a symphony tip for some time. I think the big incentive was being able to see composer John Williams as he conducted some of his works! If your unaware of Composer John Williams, he’s only the most influential composer in the freaking galaxy! John Williams has scored our lives, some of his credits include but are not limited too: Star Wars, Jaws, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, E.T., Superman, The Pink Panther and so many more!
While John Williams conducted, their was a big screen in which they would play some clips of movies! Truly a feast for the eyes! One clip that stands out in my memory was the Indiana Jones “Raiders Of The Lost Ark”. John Williams conducted the scene where Indiana and Alfred Molina go in the the cave and get that Idol! You remember the scene, with the big boulder! Well, he did that entire 5 min scene live, with full orchestra! It was so interesting to see it done in front of your eyes! I could envision what it was like to be recording that score in the 80’s! Here is a small clip of that scene:
Of course it was great to hear the Jurassic Park score as well as the Pink Panther theme but I went for one reason only, to hear some Star Wars! I even went wearing my Star Wars shirt! The Light Sabers were out in full force! Such a thrill tho here the Emperors March and of course the main title to Star Wars! There was hooping and hollering! Light Sabers filled the bowl as I watched in my seat, looking attentively at the french horns and the cellos! truly a fun filled evening!
So there you have it, great night filled with countless scores from films I grew up with. I got to see John Williams conduct, as well as Julie Andrews do some narration! If you’re a fan of film and music, something like this is for you.
