Singer/songwriter Chad Kichula has woven a piece of American musical tapestry with his full-length album Killer.
Part Elvis Presley boogie (“Still Around,” “Listening”), part Willie Nelson country (“Miner Road”), part Bruce Springsteen soul (“Mothers Cry”) and part Jimmy Buffet beach bum (“Bar Fly”), and all stitched together to make a unique listening experience.
The greatest part about Kichula, and Killer, is the fact that his material isn’t obviously crafted for the sole purpose of getting laid. Although his soothing voice will certainly make the ladies melt, he doesn’t need to gobsmack the listener with overt advances in the form of sappy love songs and stock themes. Don’t be confused, Kichula is not to be directly compared to a John Mayer or Jason Mraz.
Killer, despite its name, is an album that only focuses on one theme: fun. Even when the subject matter may not be as sunny as the sound of the song, “I couldn’t stand the sight of you, so happy,” on “Still Around.” Kichula has put together an album that bends and swerves when and where it wants through various genres; and somehow this maneuvering creates a certain charm that’s blissfully unaware of its crooked smile and awkward gait. Killer is 100% American, warts and all.
